Harz Kurier

The Harz Kurier is the local newspaper for the administrative district of Osterode am Harz. It was established as a newspaper in the year 1848 as a home newspaper for the then area of Herzberg am Harz and the district.

Since the 1st July 2007, the Harz Kurier has been part of the Braunschweiger newspaper publishing company and thus part of the WAZ media group. The Harz Kurier appears daily, with a circulation of just under 19.000 copies.

In 1969, as one of the first local newspapers in the Federal Republic of Germany to do so, the Harz Kurier moved across to a completely ‘local news first’ format. Since then, national news coverage in the Harz Kurier has been confined to the internal pages. This was a step that was welcomed by the newspaper’s readership and continually increased the circulation vis à vis the competition with rival publications.

Since 1997, the Harz Kurier has been the sole local newspaper for the Osterode am Harz district. The local news coverage concentrates on events in the district itself and in the southern part of Lower Saxony.

In a widespread geographical district, the Harz Kurier views itself as having the function of bringing the individual towns and communities together and giving them a shared platform. Its high level of household coverage and extensive reach into the local population are confirmed by the many letters and comments it receives from its readers.

The advertising newspapers the ‘Echo zum Sonntag’ and the ‘Harzer Wochenspiegel’ are also part of the Harz Kurier publishing company, each with a circulation of around 55.000 copies.
